CROI 2013: Small Risk of Birth Defects Due to Efavirenz Confirmed in French Cohort

A large French study has found an elevated risk of some birth defects in children born to women exposed to some antiretroviral drugs during the first trimester of pregnancy, French researchers reported on at the 20th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI 2013) this month in Atlanta.

HIV positive women in high-income countries where clean water and safe baby formula are widely available should avoid breast-feeding -- regardless of antiretroviral therapy (ART) use or low viral load -- in order to minimize the risk of transmitting the virus to their infants, according to a new policy statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

A review of clinical records from Central Manchester University Hospitals has found more evidence of an increased rate of preterm delivery of babies born to HIV positive women who are taking antiretroviral therapy (ART), according to a study presented at the 11th International Congress on Drug Therapy in HIV Infection in Glasgow this month. 
Breast Milk Inhibits HIV and Prevents Oral Transmission in Mice

Human breast milk has a strong inhibitory effect on HIV in vitro and was shown to reduce the likelihood of oral transmission of the virus in a mouse model designed to mimic the human mouth and upper gastrointestinal tract, researchers reported in the June 14, 2012, edition of the open-access journal PLoS Pathogens.
